About Toton
Toton is a suburban village in the Borough of Broxtowe, around 6 miles south-west of Nottingham city centre. With a population of approximately 5,500 residents, it forms part of the wider Beeston built-up area on Nottinghamshire's western edge. The name derives from the Saxon "Tovetune" — the farmstead of Torolf — recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Historically an agricultural community with extensive orchards, Toton transformed dramatically in the 20th century due to two major developments: the expansion of Toton Sidings (once one of Europe's largest marshalling yards) and the establishment of the National Shell Filling Factory during World War I on adjacent land that is now Chetwynd Barracks.
Toton Sidings
One of the UK's largest rail depots, established by the Midland Railway in the 1850s to handle coal from the Nottinghamshire coalfields. By the 1950s, over 1 million wagons passed through annually — making it the largest marshalling yard in Europe.
