About Gunthorpe
Gunthorpe is a picturesque riverside village on the banks of the River Trent, home to approximately 740 residents (2021 census). The name derives from Old Norse — combining Gunnhildr (a Viking woman's name) with þorp meaning 'outlying farm' — reflecting its origins in the Danelaw period when the Viking Great Army sailed up the Trent in 873. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded "Gulnhorp" as a substantial settlement with 52 households, making it among the largest 20% of recorded settlements — larger than nearby Lowdham at the time. A suspected Neolithic henge (2800-2000 BC) lies buried near the A6097, evidence of the crossing's ancient significance.
Gunthorpe Bridge & Lock
The only road crossing of the Trent between Nottingham and Newark. The current concrete bridge (1927) replaced an 1875 iron toll bridge. Gunthorpe Lock, excavated 1922-25, is one of the largest on the Trent at 150ft long.
