About Carlton
Carlton is a suburban town in the Borough of Gedling, immediately east of Nottingham city centre. With a population of approximately 6,881 (2011 census) in the town itself and over 53,000 in the wider Carlton area (2021), it's one of Nottingham's most established suburbs. The name derives from Anglo-Saxon "Ceorl-tun" — meaning "settlement of freemen" — and the town appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Carentune". Originally a small township of farmers and framework knitters within the parish of Gedling, Carlton's population grew rapidly after the 1846 railway connected it to Nottingham and Lincoln. The 1914 tram route from Nottingham city centre cemented its role as a commuter suburb.

Grade II listed parish church built 1884-1891 in distinctive Roman Basilica style. Commissioned by Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon. Contains carved oak stalls by Eric Gill (1903).
