About Shelford
Shelford is a historic village in the Rushcliffe borough of Nottinghamshire, situated on the south bank of the River Trent approximately 8 miles east of Nottingham. The name derives from the Old English "scelde" (shallowness) + "ford", meaning "place of the shallow ford" — and settlement here dates back to the Bronze Age. With a population of around 267 residents (2021 census), this is a quiet, close-knit farming community with a rich and sometimes turbulent history. The village's vernacular architecture features distinctive red brick and red pantile construction, with the "important" historic buildings under slate.
St Peter and St Paul's Church
Grade II* listed medieval church with origins in the 13th century. Features a remarkable 900 AD Saxon Cross fragment — one of the finest early figure sculptures in Nottinghamshire. The tower was used by Royalist snipers during the 1645 Civil War siege.
