About Cotgrave
Cotgrave is a town in the Rushcliffe borough of Nottinghamshire, 5 miles south-east of Nottingham city centre. Home to approximately 8,206 residents (2021 census), it sits on the South Nottinghamshire Wolds at around 40 metres above sea level. The name derives from Old English "Cotta's grove", and the settlement appears in the Domesday Book as "Godegrave." Archaeological evidence shows occupation since the Iron Age, with a 6th-century Anglo-Saxon burial ground excavated at Mill Hill. The Roman Fosse Way (now the A46) passes a mile to the east. Cotgrave remained a small agricultural village until the 1960s, when the discovery of coal transformed it completely.
All Saints Church
Grade I listed parish church dating from the 12th century with medieval fabric from 13th-15th centuries. Contains the 1637 "Plague Stone" used to disinfect money during a plague outbreak when two villagers locked themselves in the church as a food store.
